AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS WILSON WINS MEN'S SINGLES MISS ELLETT RETAINS TITLE Tho concluding day's play in the Auckland provincial badminton championships on Saturday afternoon and evening was witnessed by an increased attendance of spectators. The tournament was most successful and tho play, particularly in the final stages, reached a hiph standard. A feature of the games was tho fact that, with the exception of Miss A. Ellett who defeated Miss J. Ramsay, the Dominio'n title-holder, in a" hardfought game, tho championships all changed hands. The success of M. T. Wilson, who defeated G. Martin, the men's singles title-holder, aroused a mild surprise. The match was particularly keen, Martin fighting all the way, hut Wilson was a little too good. 1?. F. Hull and W. G. Taylor provided the sensation of the tournament by defeating I. Ellett and G. Martin in the semi-final of, the men's doubles. Martin's judgment was poor at times, and with Hull playing an outstanding game and receiving excellent support from Taylor, any mistakes were turned to advantage. The'score, 17 —16, 10—15, IS —16, gives some indication of tho keen struggle. In tho final against H. Fow and P. Anderson, another keen match eventuated, but. maintaining their aggressive tactics, Hull and Taylor scored a, meritorious victory. The final of tho ladies' doubles, in which Mrs. C. Wren and Miss A. Ellett won from pisses J. E. Ramsay and D. Newton, was responsible for some particularly fine clearing and well-judged drop shots, f While chief interest centred in the A grade matches, the finals of the B and C grades and handicap events provided some attractive and close contests. The final of the combined handicap doubles, in which R. Hull and Miss H. Harrison beat C. Ellett and Miss M. Waters, maintained a high standard, the score, 21—20, fully reflecting the play.
