COMRADES BEAT PONSONBY
BAD CROUND CONDITIONS The Western Springs ground was iin a waterlogged ; condition for the meeting of Ponsonby and Comrades, while light rain did not assist accurate hnll control. Good football was out of the question, and kick-and-rush methods were most iri evidence, with loUg-rango duels between tlio backs. Comrades, witli its experience of the ground, adopted the best and only effective methods early and, swinging the ball about well, had pnnsonby nonplussed. Page kept Comrades' goal well under the circumstances and with Jones and Saunders repelled many dangerous Ponsouby movements. Egan was the pick of a halfback lino which was always aggressive, and he kept hiß line on the move. Evans had more than his share of the ball, but, with judicious passes, he distributed it along the linie. Cole at contre played a watchful game, and with Foreman and Fletcher on the left harassed the defence, and made several openings for Francis. Ground conditions played havoc with Ponsonby'e defence, and both Stewart and Edwards 'appeared to bo far from sure of the creasy ball, while the conditions gave "Wateon little chance to save some of the ■tools, Hatgott wm again a force in ihe ' itowwiaix position, and he broke pp
promising movements. With Cooke and Masters lie initiated several attacks, and lor a time in the first spell Ponsonby was well on tho offensive. Innes was at homo in tho mud, and received most support from McMillan and Glaistcr, the latter making covoral solo' efforts, which were spoilt by holding on too long. Farnan and Porter made tho play in tho second half but attempting short passing movements spoilt most of their efforts. Comrades' scorers were Cole (-), Francis (2), Foreman. McMillan (2) scored foi I onsonby and Jones deflected the ball into lua own net. , Mr. J. Calvert was referee. lower grade results Second Grade. —Metro-College, 4, North Shore, 2; Y.M.C.A. won from Ponsonby A by default: Abels A. 9. Henderson, 0; Abels B. 3, New Lynn A. 3.
