RANGITAIKI BEATS TAURANGA [Bl r TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHAKATANE, Saturday The Rangitaiki Rugby representatives successfully defended the Hurinui-Apanui Shield to-day by defeating Tauranga by 16 points to 3. There waa no score in the first half. Tauranga forwards dominated the game, but the backs were unable to take advantage. The first score came to Rangltaiki just after the half-time resumption, ■when, from- a good passing rush, R. Lees ecorcd. A wide-out kick missed the bar by inches. Tauranga equalised shortly alter with a penalty. I'angitaiki backs now took charge, and fioni a nice movement in midfield Hohiipata broke away and scored near t' ie coiner, Sutherland'? kick going wide. Taulanga fought, very hard and carried play into Rangitaiki territory, where the holders were hard-pressed, until the forwards worked play into hali-way, where the ball was kicked out syds from Tauranga s corner. A scrum resulted in the ball coming out to the halfback, who passed to E. Howell, who went over under the posts, Francis adding the extra points. Play was fairly even until about ten minutes from time, when Tama broke through with the bull at his toe, picKinp up smartly near the twenty-five-xard mark and passing to Hohapata, who, with a great burst of speed, ran round the opposing backs and scored behind the posts, Francis again putting on the extra points.
