OFFICERS AS DECKHANDS

PORT G jSBORN E'S CREW 18 CERTIFICATED MEN The practice of carrying certificated officers as deckhands still continues on the Commonwealth and Dominion Line motor-ship Port Gisborne, which arrived from London yesterday morning. The 18 seamen in the forecastle have all served as cadets in the company and each has passed for his second mate's certificate.

Owing to the large number of vessels laid up in Great Britain, hundreds of officers and masters are unable to obtain employment. A considerable number have been compelled to go to sea as members of a crew, waiting for tho time when they are fortunate enough to obtain a position on the bridge of a vessel. , For nearly four years the Port Gisborne's seamen have been all certificated second officers, and during that period some of the men have remained as long as 18 months in the vessel.
