STOCKS AND SHARES

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE record level in loans A fairly strong buying tone was evident i" dealing on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. However, the range of demand was restricted somewhat and turnover was maintained at an average level. Support for Government loans was firmer and new high levels ivcra established on sale. Inquiry was directed chiefly to the 4 per cents, practically all of which were sought 5s to 10s higher. A parcel of 1940 bonds was accepted 10* higher at £lO7 10s, more being unobtainable at this price. The 1949 stock changed hands 15s higher at £lO9 15s and the 1955 stock at £llO 10s, a rise of 10s. The last-named price is the highest yet recorded for any issue. Banks were quiet, dealing being confined to New Zealand®, which were /placed twice unchanged at 40s Bd. Closing offers rose to this iigure, but holders also firmed. Reserve Banks were sought 3d dearer at £6 7s, supplies being firmly he'd. Support for Commercials eased slightly, but levels generally were steady. ' Slight weakness developed in the demand for some insurances, notably New Zealands. South British were secured 3d cheaper at 82s 6d, while Nationals were done at the current rate, 19s 9d. In loan and agency, GoldsbroughMorts sold at 29s 7sd, a rise of 7Jd. Westport-Stoektons, preference, were placed at os and Auckland Gas at 2os Id, both unchanged rates. Further supplies of Auckland Gas could not bo gpcured at the price quoted. Levels were firmer i'or Wilsons Cements, which sold unchanged at 30s. Colonial Sugars were obtained at £OS, a rise of ss, with jnquirv for additional supplies unsatisfied. Sales were made also in Consolidated Bricks 3d dearer at 8s 3d, and Farmers' Fertilisers unchanged at . 20s 3d. CLOSING QUOTATIONS
