ST. HELIERS AFFAIRS

Sir, —1 regret to learn that the City Council has decided to proceed with further road work on the cliff at St. Heliers. I do not know on what advice this is being done before the lower road to Glendowie is proceeded with. This road, Vale Road, is each day becoming more a menace to the life of motorists than probably the Mayor and councillors of Auckland are aware. For the past three years men have been employed in lifting the shingle from the side of the road and putting it in "the middle, only for it to be carried back again in a few hours. The footpath is about t/he worst in Auckland and unsafe to travel on after dusk. Then there is the Tamaki Canal which, through the summer months, is most objectionable, and can only be cured by piping. J. Stubbs.
