ART SOCIETY FORMED
MOVEMENT IN WAIKATO ELECTION OF OFFICERS [from OUR OWN correspondent] HAMILTON. Thursday The proposals of Mrs. A. Younghusband and Miss Ida Carey to form a Waikato Society of Arts were unanimously adopted at a meeting at Hamilton. Dr. E. T. Rogers presided over an attendance of 60. The chairman said that some time ago it was proposed to form a branch of the Auckland Society of Arts in Hamilton, but it was felt that the Waikato should have a society ox its own.
Mrs. Younghusband said there was ample talent available in the Waikato, but except for the classes provided by the Waikato Winter Show Association, there were no means of assisting those interested in art. With a society it was proposed to hold annual exhibitions, at which outstanding examples of painting obtained on loan could be shown.
Miss Carey considered that a society would give life and impetus to art, and would gain contact with those possessing talent. It was hoped that later an art gallery would be established.
When the meeting decided that a society should be formed, the following officers were elected: —President, Dr. E. T. Rogers; vice-presidents, Dr. F. D. Pinfold. Messrs. A. E. Manning, W. H. Paul, H. Vakler, E. Phillips Turner, R. 0. Grose, and H. E. Gaze; secretary, Mrs. A. Younghusband; council, Mrs. Younghusband, Mrs. R. Powell, Miss I. Carey, Messrs. E. Lewis, J. H. Edgecumbe, J. Treloar and H. G. Coombcs.
