MEMORIAL TO VICAR

LATE CANON GRANT COWEN WINDOW IN ST. MATTHEW'S The memorial to be erected in St. Matthew's Church to the memory of its late vicar, Canon C. H. Grant Cowen, will take the form of a stainedglass window, and if sufficient money is raised it will be erected in the eastern wall. The amount sought is £ISOO. The meeting held in St. Matthew's parish hall last evening to discuss the question was well attended. Archbishop Averill, who presided, said the thought of the meeting should bo concentrated upon what form of memorial was possible, as under the present economic conditions they would not be able to raise the sum of money that would be possible otherwise. Tho expenditure, howovcr, was not tho primary purpose of tho memorial. Whatever they did it should be complete in itself and stand out as a memorial to the one to whom it was erected. Personally, ho was of an open mind. Archdeacon G. Mac Murray considered the memorial should be a thing of beauty, and, secondly, something that was unmistakably a memorial to the late Itev. Canon Grant Cowen. Ho did not favour the expenditure of a large sum which would place tho parish in difficulties in its repayment. The opinion of the meeting in the early stages was divided upon a proposal for the installation of a new organ, and one for the installation of a window. The estimated cost of the organ was stated to be £3OOO. In times such as the present the chairman considered it would be difficult to raiso more than £SOO. After further discussion it was decided to proceed with tho proposal for a memorial window. The following officers were appointed for the purpose of carrying out the proposal:—Patron, Archbishop Averill; secretary, Mr. H. O. Searle; treasurer, Archdeacon W. J. Simkin; committee, Messrs. E. O. Frickor, R. Morton, W. Biss, A. Hallett, R. Dyer, W. Andrews and A. R. Fairey, and Dr. Kenrick. Tho committee has power to add to its number.
