ACTiVITY IN BUILDING NEW HARBOUR BOARD OFFICES There was considerable building activity in Auckland 50 years ago. The New Zealand Herald of August 12, 1884, stated: —" The new officen for the Harbour Board are now progressing {satisfactorily. After many various delays the contractor, Mr. W. G. Connolly, is pushing on with the work. Two storeys are now erected and the third is begun. The facade, which fronts the harbour, promises to be a very handsome one, ard when the tower and flag-pole are erected should have an imposing appearance. It is expected the building will cost about £BOOO. The plans of the Jewish Synagogue (the premium design for which was that of Mr. E. Bart ley. architect) have been approved by the building committee and were submitted on Sunday last (August 10) to the congregation for final approval. They have been adopted without alterations. The synagogue will be constructed oif brick in the Romanesque style, with a touch of Gothic in the ornamentation. The basement will be of bluestone and concrete. The branch premises of the Auckland Savings Bank on the Ponsonby Road are rapidly drawing toward completion and will probably be opened for business in a month or six weeks. The branch will Srove a great convenience to the resients of-the district as offering facilities for saving to the thrifty and industriouu of J;he working classes."
