KAURI GUM EXPORT

QUANTITY IN JULY MOST TO UNITED KINGDOM A total of 341 tons of kauri gum, valued at £7229, an average of about £2l a ton, was exported from Auckland last month. This compared with June's figure of 4:31 tons, valued at £12,464, an average of about £29 a ton. Tho export in June was the largest total for a considerable time. Of last month's 341 tons, 237 was sent to the United Kingdom, as against 219 in June, 28 tons to the United States, compared with 80, 25 tons to France, compared with 11, and 21 to Canada, compared with 30. Other countries represented were Australia, Japan and Germany. Merchants state there is still little demand for tho better grade gums. Stocks of lower grade meet with a fairly constant demand, but buying for the most part is conducted on small margins. Kauri gum is used to a large extent in the manufacture of linoleums and it is thought that the falling-off in the demand for this article has contributed to the restriction of the market for kauri gum. The better quality gums, used chiefly in varnishes and paints, have to contend with competition from synthetic products, which are sought for their cheapness, although it is stated their quality cannot compare with the genuine gum. The following table gives the export figures from Auckland for July, showing the countries to which the gum is sent and its value: — Country Tonnage Value United Kingdom .. 2157 £1.178 United States .. 28 1.223 Franco . . •. 25 323 Canada .. -. 21 419 Australia .. .. 16 Japan .. .. 8 Germany .. 6 oJ Totals .. 311 £7.229 FREEZING WORKS OFFER PREMISES AT KAIAPOI [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCB, Friday An offer to purchase its works at Kainpoi is being considered by the directors of the North Canterbury Sheepfarmers' Co-operative Freezing Company, but the amount of the offer or tho identity of the prospective buvers has not been disclosed, lho matter is to be submitted to shareholders.
