TAKAPUNA DRAINAGE
NEW SEWER PROPOSED POSSIBILITY OF SUBSIDY It was suggested by Mr. C. L. Clifton at a meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council yesterday that, while a subsidy was available and money could be borrowed cheaply, a number of subsidiary drainage lines should be laid and connected with the main sewer. He considered that the annual payments from the lines in question would .repay interest and capital within a few years. The Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, maintained that the council was not in a position to borrow more money, and there was not sufficient money from ; maintenance works available for the purpose. ''Since I have been in this chair I have never had such difficulty in trying to prevent extravagance as with the present council," he said. It was decided to .defer consideration of the matter until after the Mayor had obtained particulars from the Unemployment Board in Wellington as to what subsidy would be available for the work. The Mayor was also authorised to conduct further negotiations in Wellington with the Unemployment Board as regards the obtaining of a subsidy for resurfacing Walters Hill.
