STEAMER ASHORE

NEW GUINEA MISHAP THE PASSENGERS LANDED (Received August 8, 5.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 8 A wireless message reports that the Island steamer Montoro is ashore at Fortification Point, near Finschafen, New Guinea. The passengers have been landed and the cargo is being discharged.

The water in No. 1 hold is more than Bft. deep. The vessel is bumping on the rocks, but is in no immediate danger. An attempt will be made to tow her off when the cargo has been unloaded. The passengers have gone to Salamoa, 80 miles distant.

The Montoro is a steel-screw steamer of 4057 tons gross register. She is owned by Burns, Philp and Company, Limited. She was built on the Clyde in 1911.
