IMPORTED TOMATO PULP

DUTY CONCESSION OPPOSED MINISTER SUPPORTS GROWERS [BY TELEGRAPH SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Wednesday A protest against any removal of the duty on Australian tomato pulp was made to the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. C. E. Macmillan, to-day, by a deputation from New Zealand growers. It was stated that manufacturers of sauce and soups had asked for a concession in the duty on Australian pulp as there was a shortage of New Zealand pulp, but the shortage was denied by the tomato-growers. They also contened that ff there was a shortage it was due to lack of foresight on the part of tho manufacturers. "You can rest assured that I will assist you to tho best of my ability in seeing that the duty is retained," said tho Minister. "I don't know that it would not be wiser for you people to ask for a stiffer duty." The Minister added ho could not see that tho manufacturers had made a case at all.
