TRIUMPH OF BATSMEN
♦ FOUR WICKETS FOR 494 RUNS ENGLISH BOWLING DOMINATED ) A sensational turn was given to the fourth test cricket match between England and Australia at Leeds on Saturday by an outstanding partnership between Ponsford and Bradman, which yielded 388 runs and resulted in wearing out England s bowlers. TJ\e partners not only broke the record f° r a fourth wicket stand in a test match, but also created a new record for the highest partnership in a test. England s dismissal on Friday for the moderate total of 200 runs was likewise sensational, but Saturday's batting performance by Bradman and Ponsford wa.s remarkable cricket. They remained together until after tea, Bradman in a masterly innings doing most of the scoring. He ended the day with an unbeaten 271. Ponsford was unlucky to be out for 181 through touching his wicket with his heel and dislodging a bail. A crowd of 40,000 spectators attended the match on Saturday afternoon—a record for Leeds. The Australians now are in the strong position of having a lead of 294 over England on the first innings with six wickets still in hand and Bradman and McCabe to continue the batting to-day.
