TELEPHONES DAMAGED

THEFT OF COIN-BOXES

GREY LYNN CABINETS The theft of the coin-boxes from two public telephones in Grey Lynn and an unsuccessful attempt to break open a third instrument in the same district, were reported to the police during the week-end. In all three cases, the telephones were damaged, two being torn from their mountings in the cabinets. The missing coin-boxes are belie v °d to have contained small sums.

The first box visited by the thieves is at the corner of Surrey Crescent and Richmond Avenue. It was found early on Saturday morning that the telephone had been removed from the wall, a plate prised off the side, and the coin-box stolen. The damaged instrument was lying on the floor of the cabinet.

Two other cases of damage to public telephones were reported yesterday morning. A telephone at the corner of Garnet and Old Mill Roads was found to have been smashed open, and the coin-box was missing. In the third case, the thieves made an unsuccessful attemp to break open a telephone in a box in "Williamson Avenue. They were unable, however, to wrench off a plate from the side of the machine, which was left in a less damaged condition than the other two.
