PROMINENT HORSES

PERFORMANCE OF LUNA LUX [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN COItItERPOXDENT] HASTINGS, Sunday Most interest in the Hawke's Bay Hunt Club's Meeting yesterday centred in tho appearance of Luna Lux, who ran in the hurdle race. Luna Lux was prominent throughout the running, and although only a moderate third at the finish, he ran a sound race and pulled up well. He looks very bright and muscular. Provided the track is not too soft Luna Lux will be given another race at Marton on Wednesday, followed by one at the Manawatu meeting on Saturday. This should bring him on for his Grand National engagements, and if he stands up to them he is likely to take a more prominent part in the important event at Riccarton than is generally expected. The Winter Ctip candidate Slippery put up a solid performance to win the concluding event under 9.13. Slippery is regarded in Hawke's Bay very well in the Winter Cup and is a certain runner. He will be ridden by Atkins, who was successful on him at Trentham, and also yesterday. Passion Fruit's return to the winning list was also marked by solid galloping, as he had to run up to the fast pace set by Sabatino and then challenge to bent the latter in tho straight, which he did in an impressive style, indicating a return to his best form.

RICCARTON HORSES SPRINT BY SILVER "RING HOUNSLOW ALL RIGHT AGAIN [b\' telegraph—OWN correspondent] CH'RISTCHURCH, Saturday The Riccarton tracks bore their usual busy appearance to-day, but there was not much serious galloping, the majority of the horses in commission being given strong work only. Accordingly the times generally were not fast, the best being that recorded by Silver Ring, who rtjelcd off half a mile in 49 3-ss. He mo<-ed very freely and did not appear as if he were going at this speed. Grecian Prince, who has not been much in evidence on the tracks lately, ran six furlongs well in 1.19 2-5. Polydora was another interesting worker, and she covered six furlongs in .1.21 without being seriously ridden at any part. She is coming to hand satisfactorily, and iB due to make her reappearance at the hunt meeting at Riccarton. •

Hounalow and Sweet Agnes ran seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5. The former seems to be all right again, and, with the work he will get in the next few weeks, together with a race at the hunt fixture, he is expected to be in proper order again for Grand National week. Sweet Agnes, who looks much more robust than when last raced, is to reappear at the hunt meeting. Sea Fox's Improvement

One of the most attractive sprints over half a mile was that credited to Sea Fox and Lowater, who recorded 51 2-ss. Sea Fox has shaped up well in the past few weeks and bears a much healthier appearance thun when he arrived at Riccarton. Quietly is back in active work again, and in company with Niggerhead galloped six furlongs in 1.20 3-5;

Tluirina, with A. E. Ellis in the saddle, strode over seven furlongs at a strong pace and appeared to be anxious to go faster. It is not intended to race him at Timaru next Saturday. Verdcn was given a similar task. He showed at the Wellington meeting that he is not a good traveller, and better results can be expected from him in his near-at-home engagements next monthL Nightly and Custodian were given useful work over six furlongs, and Two No Trumps and Abdication sprinted down the straight. Mr. J. A. McDongall, owner of Nightly, and his brother, owner of Abdication, were interested spectators. Punchestown and Rational 11. wore responsible for a useful display over ten of the schooling steeplechase fences. Rational 11. jumped well throughout and was faster at most of the fences than his mate. He has only to repeal his track efforts on a race-track to bo a winner over country. Punchestown did not shape as well as previously, and his appearance after work suggested that all is not well with him. Starshooter, Night Parade and Jolly Beggar were companions over four hurdles, all jumping well, and Fleeting Glanco was given a similar task. Manetho in Trouble Again Manetho who was being got ready to reappear at the Christehurch hunt meeting and later to contest the Winter Cup. has had to bi> put aside again by his trainer, F. Christmas. The trouble is not in the legs this time, but he is suffering from some internal complaint, probably the same as that which affected him in the early stages of his career when trained by ,1. li. Peamon, who experienced much trouble in getting him fit to face a starter. Control was restricted to light work today. He struck himself earlier in tho week and there is a possibility that may not be taken to Australia by F. D. Jones, but will remain with E. Parker, head lad to Jones, who has taken out a trainer's licence. Nominations received by the Christehurch Ilunt Club for" its annual steeplechase meeting on August 4 total 202, as against 153 last year. Several Winter Cu'i candidates figure in the Braba'/.on Handicap, while clnss is well represented in the Longb&ach Hurdles. Visiting horses entered include Pahu, Royal Lineage, Billy Boy, Free Air, Transact, Horowhenua and Wee Musk. PAKURANGA HUNT ENTRIES Entries for the Pokurunca Hunt race meeting at Elleifslie on August 18 close tit f> p.ru. next Friday with Mr. W. S. Sponco, secretary of the Auckland Racing Club.
