TRIAL OF ABORIGINES

NO FURTHER WITNESSES DESIRE TO AVOID BLOODSHED The trial of the two aborigines, Tuckiar and Merara, who are charged with the murder of Constable McColl at Wood ah Island, is to be proceeded with at Darwin, Northern Australia, without additional witnesses. It had been intended to send police to Groote Eylandt to attempt to obtain a witness. The Minister for the Interior Mr Perkins, said recently that the police had stated it would be impossible to obtain any witnesses without bloodshed. The Government was opposed to any action being taken that might result in bloodshed, and, therefore, it had been decided to abandon the attempt to obtain additional evidence. Mr. Perkins declined to comment on the alleged action of the Church Missionary Society in refusing to cooperate with the police in. an effort to obtain a witness to appear against the aborigines.
