OBITUARY
MRS. H. E. T. JOHNSON The death occurred recently of Mrs. H. E. T. Johnson, of Kerikeri, Bay of Islands, at tho' age of 77. She was the second daughter of Wi Kairc, who was the leading chief of the Ngapuhi in tho troublesome times of the early thirties. It was Wi Kaire who was largely responsible for tho settlement of the early missionaries at Wairnato North. His influence was always used for peace. lie was appointed a native .Judge by the Government and enjoyed a pension for life. It was Mrs. Johnson and her sister, Patari, who were tho principal movers in forming the Committee Wahine, by whose influence tho present hui house, or hall, at Waitangi was built. Mrs. Johnson was educated at a private school conducted by Mrs. James Tautari, ut Taumarere, near Kawakawa. On leaving school, she went to the missionaries at Waimate North and lived there until she married. She took a great interest in the welfare of the Maori. Mrs Johnson had a family of 13, and her husband and four sons volunteered early in the Great War."MR. CHARLES H.
