RATES LOST TO CITY
GOVERNMENT PROPERTY WELLINGTON'S BIG TOTAL "The executive obtained a return from the town clerk showing the amount lost to ratepayers due to the fact that the Government pays no rates upon property it occupies in Wellington," states the annual report of tho chairman of the Wellington Ratepayers' Association. "On its freehold property other than Parliament . Buildings, Government House, and schools, the total of rates forgone by the city is over £20,000 per jinnum. On rented property which the Government occupies the city loses another £SOOO a year," states the-report
"In addition to tho £25,000 a year that the city loses upon property occupied by the Government no rates are paid by the Government upon pro]>erty abandoned to tho State Advances arid other Government departments by defaulting mortgagors. Tho sum lost te the city in this way during the past year or two must have been considerable."
