GROUP HERD-TESTING

WHANGAREI ASSOCIATION [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Saturday The Whangarei Group Herd-Testing Association had a successful year as revealed in the annual report and bal-ance-sheet. Attention was drawn to the fact that the fees had been reduced, thus giving the farmer the most benefit that. could be afforded. The report further stated that expenses had been kept down to a minimum, and it was hoped there would bo an increase in the number of farmers who would have their herds tested through the association. It was emphasised that a cow producing under 2501b. of fat was not paying its way at 9d, and one way to keep down costs was to increase butter-fat per cow per acre.

Altogether 106 herds were tested with a total of 5907 cows. The report congratulated Mr. W. G. Johnson, of Kanio, and Messrs. Rusk Brothers, of Towai, 011 the exceedingly good performances of their cows—the former with nine cows and 3991b. fat, and the latter with 48 cows and 3951b. fat. Mr. Johnson had the highest cow, a pedigree, with 6171b. fat in 365 days.
