July 20 The fourth test cricket match between England and Australia was begun this morning at Leeds. The weather was fino and warm and a light breeze was blowing. There were 25,000 spectators when play started, crowds having begun to assemble at an early hour. The teams finally selected were:—• ENGLAND R. E. S. Wyatfc (Warwickshire). C. F. Walters (Worcestershire). W. R. Hammond (Gloucestershire). E. Hendren (Middlesex). M. Leyland (Yorkshire). L. E. G. Ames (Kent). H. Verity (Yorkshire). J. L. Hopwood (Lancashire). W. W. Keeton (Nottinghamshire). W. E. Bowes (Yorkshire). T. B. Mitchell (Derbyshire). M. S. Nichols (Essex), 12th man. Sutcliffe, Allen and Clark are the three Englishmen who played in the third test and have been dropped in this one. Keeton was 12th man but is now in the team. The newcomers are Bowes and Mitchell, with Nichols as 12th man. Walters and Keeton opened England's first innings on a wicket which still contained a good deal of moisture due to overnight rain following upon earlier heavy falls.

Wall mid McCabe opened the bowling. Both batsmen played the former with confidence. Walters scoring three fours ojEF his first two ov<rs. McCabe was respected. The wicket looked easy. Grinnnett and O'Koilly went on when half an hour had produced 30 runs. Twenty minutes later Keeton played over a ball from O'Reilly, which was faster than previous ones and Oldfield took a smart catch on the off side. One wicket for 43. Australian Fieldsmen, Applauded The fielding was good in spite of the rough ground. Bradman and Darling were especially fine and were applauded. The first 50 was raised in 65 minutes When Walters had made 44 he was 1 caught and bowled by Chipper field. Two for 85. Hammond and Hendren then became partnered and at the luncheon interval had taken England's total to 96 for two wickets.
