CHILDREN'S LIBRARIES
FREE LENDING PLAN OVER 1000 ENROLMENTS More than 1000 children have enrolled in the past fortnight at the central and branch libraries as a result of tho City Council's decision to make its lending library service free to children of city ratepayers. The number enrolled under the former subscription system is rathor over 600. A child who applies is required to sign a card, and this must be endorsed by a parent or other ratepayer, who guarantees to make good the value of any books lost or damaged. In addition to maintaining children's departments at its libraries, the council provides 27 primary schools with 10S classroom collections, from which 91,00J volumes were issued last year. The response to the new plan, which was suggested by Mr. Ralph Munn, director of the Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh, on his recent visit, is regarded as most encouraging.
