SAVED FROM DROWNING
MAN FALLS INTO HARBOUK RESCUED UNCONSCIOUS TV/O OTHERS SWIM TO AID A narrow escape from drowning was experienced by a young man at about 7.20 p.m. on Saturday when he fell into the harbour near the launch steps between the ferry tees and Prince 3 Wharf. He was rescued by Mr. F. Warren, of York Street, Parnell, and Mr. Henry Bond, of 46 Peary Road, Mount Kden, who dived into the water fully clothed. The plight of the man was first noticed by a taxi-driver, Mr. L. Bonney, whose cab was on the rank m Quay Street. Mr. Bonney immediately threw a lifebuoy into the water, but the drowning man failed to grasp it. Messrs. Warren and Bond, who had been about to engage a taxi off the rank, then jumped into the water and swam to the assistance of the man, who was struggling to keep afloat about 15 yards from the launch steps. With the aid of a lifebuoy attached to a rope they succeeded in keeping the man above water.
Clinging to the lifebuoy the three men were dragged back to the launch steps and artificial respiration was applied to the rescued man, who was unconscious, by Constable Allsopp, of the waterfront police, and Messrs. Warren and Bond. The rescued man was later taken to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance. Although suffering from the effects of his immersion he is not in a serious condition. While in the water Mr. Warren lost a new wallet containing a number of personal papers and a £1 banknote.
