ARMS EMBARGO
BRITISH APPLICATION NO AIRCRAFT FOR PARAGUAY (Received July 5 6.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, July 4 Britain has put into force an arms embargo in the Bolivian-Paraguayan dispute by refusing to supply aeroplanes to Paraguay. The Secretary-General of the League of Nations, M. Joseph Avenol, received a letter from the British Government giving details of the refusal.
The letter stated that the Paraguayan Government recently requested the British Charge D'Affaires at Asuncion to ask Britain whether a licence would be granted by the British Government for the sale to Paraguay of two aeroplanes for purely ambulance purposes.
The British Government informed the Paraguayan Government that it did npt feel in a position to allow an order even of this kind to be fulfilled in the United Kingdom in view of the fact that the proposed international embargo on tho export of munitions of war to Bolivia and Paraguay covered the supply of aircraft of all t.ypes. The British Government hoped that if the Governments of other countries were approached in a similar sense hy tho Paraguayan Government they would return the same reply.
