LOCAL BODY CONTROL

NEED FOR REFORM GOVERNMENT ACTION URGED [by telegraph OWN correspondent] KAIKOHE. Thursday A spirited discussion took place, at the annual conference of Northern Chambers of Commerce held at Kaikohe to-day on a remit to the effect that the Government 'should take immediate steps toward the reorganisation and reduction of local bodies in New Zealand.

The remit' was brought forward by the Kaikohe Chamber of Commerce. In moving it, Mr. C. Cameron said that 40 years ago the thinking people of the time were clamouring to have local government conform to changing times, but politics and parochial feeling had been the main stumbling block in the way of any real scheme of reorganisation. It seemed that the Economy Commission was right in its report when it contended that the maximum economies in local body administration could only be effected by a measure of compulsion. There was urgent need of reform in the direction indicated by the remit, said Mr. Cameron, and the Government should be strongly urged to give effect to the recommendations of the commission.

The remit was carried almost unanimously.
