POLICE RAID HOUSES

PAKAPOO GAMES ALLEGED SEVERAL CHINESE REMANDED FINES ON EUROPEANS Ixrids by detectives on houses in Hobson Street and Grey's Avenue on Tuesday evening led to the appearance of several Chinese and Europeans in the I'.'lice Court before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M.. yesterday, on charges relating to the alleged playing of pakapoo. Wong Hum, aged 15, gardener (Mr. Tung), was charged that, being the occupier of premises at 181 Hobson Street, he vised them as a common gaming house. Ah Wong, aged 32, gardener (Mr. Tong), was charged with assisting.

On the application of counsel accused were remanded until Wednesday. Bail in the cose of the former was renewed at £IOO and in the case of tho latter at £SO. In connection with seven Europeans who were charged with being on tho premises without lawful excuse, SeniorDetective Hall said that at S p.m. Detectives Brady and Miller visited the house, which, it was alleged, was being used for the purpose of pakapoo playing.

Each of the accused pleaded guilty and was fmed £2.

Charlie Wong, aged 48, gardener (Mr. Tong). was charged -that, being tho occupier of premises at 55 Grey's Avenue, ho used them as a common gaming house.

Accused was remanded until Wednesday, bail being renewed at £IOO. Ah Gin, aged 53, laundryman (Mr.v Gould), who,,was charged with a similar offence, being the alleged occupier of premises at 92 Grey's A veiling was also remanded until Wednesday. Bail was renewed at £SO.

Four Europeans pleaded guilty to being ■found-on the premises without a lawful excuse.

Senior-Detectn e Hall said that when Detectives Hayes and Gillum visited the house on Tuesday evening the four men were found there. Two said they had gone there to mark a pakapoo ticket and the other two said they had gone to see the result of a bank. The magistrate said the fact that one of the men had stated he was a relief worker, when asking for time to pay, was no mitigation of the offence. The position was aggravated by the fact that he went and gambled away money given to him by his country for sustenance. Each of the accused was fined £2.
