Weather; Still somewhat unsettled, with scattered showers . along the east const and in the far north and south, but improving rapidly. Temperatures cold, with some hard frosts. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED The Government meteorologist issued to the Hkrat.d last night the following special weather forecast for the Auckland district: —Moderate to strong but decreasing south-westerly to southeasterly winds. The weather is still likely to be somewhat unsettled, with passing showers, but improving soon. Temperatures cold. Seas rather rough, but moderating. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland.—The weather was very cold and wintry yesterday, the conditions being changeable. A southerly gale and frequent fierce squalls with hail and rain were experienced early in the morning, but toward mid-day the wind moderated and the conditions improved, the afternoon and evening being fine. After rising since Tuesday evening the barometer reached normal last night. Barometer, midnight, rising- .. 30.00 in. Midnight, Tuesday .. .. 29.55 in!

Wellington.—The weather yesterday was very cold in the morning, "with frequent showers accompanying a squally southerly wind. The wind gradually moderated, however, and much-im-proved conditions were experienced during the afternoon, with a considerable amount of sunshine. The temperature at 4 p.m. was 42.9 degrees, and the maximum for the day was 44.5 degrees. Christchurch.—The weather was fine and sunny yesterday, but a cold southwesterly wind was blowing. The maximum temperature was 46.2 degrees. Dunedin.—A light south-westerly breeze and fine weather prevailed yesterday, with sunshine and passing cloud. The thermometer registered 38 degrees at 8 a.m., and the maximum temperature for the day was 45 degrees. The barometer reading last night was 29.95 in.
