VIOLENT EXPLOSION
SYDNEY LABORATORY SEVEN PEOPLE INJURED PANIC IN A BASEMENT (Received May 23, 9.35 p.m.) SYDNEY. May 23 Five men and two women were injured this afternoon as the result of a violent explosion when a boiler burst in a research laboratory in the city. Many windows were broken and buildings were shaken. The explosion occurred in the basement during a demonstration of dry cleaning. About eight persons were present and all were thrown down. The lights were extinguished and the room was filled with suffocating fumes. The women screamed hysterically and the men groped through the darkness calling for help. The members of the fire brigade, who were soon on the scene, rendered first aid with oxygen respirators. The women recovered, but three of the men were sent to hospital suffering from injuries to their faces and eyes. The main sufferer was Mr. Henry Drake, aged 36., a chemist. He received a broken leg, the injury being caused while he was hurriedly escaping.
