EXTRACTS-FROM THE HERALD The following .are. extracts from the New Zealand Hkkald of May 24, 188-1: — On the subject of corporal punishment'the inspector of schools furnished an important document in his report to ' the Board of Education yesterday. He does not approve of corporal punishment generally, but says that the fact that it may he used should act as a check. l'n to-day's issue will be found a petition to be presented to both Houses of Parliament from the members of the Roman Catholic Church praying for relief from the hardship to which they considered themselves subjected under the existing system of education. They suggest that a .capitation grant should be given to every Roman Catholic school, according to the average attendance and the results of examinations conducted by a Government inspector. Owing to the advent of the cold weather the attendance at the public baths has fallen off to. about 100 visitors per week. The cricket match, Australia versus Marylebone Club and Ground, commenced yesterday at Lord's. The horns side went in first, and_ remained , "throughout the day at the wickets, having lost nine wickets for 465 runs when stumps were drawn. A. G. Steel made 135 and W. G. Grace 101
