CHICAGO FIRE
GREAT DAMAGE DONE MANY SEVERELY BURNED INQUIRY INTO ORIGIN (Received May 21, 5.5 p.m.) CHICAGO. May 20 Work was started to-day to rehabilitate the fire-stricken area. Throughout last night, firemen continued to play water on the smouldering embers. A thorough search revealed that none was killed, as was erroneously reported. However, at least 1500 people suffered injuries of one sort or other. A total of 400, including scores of firemen, were severely burned. According to the latest estimates, the damage exceeds £2,000,000. The possibility of the conflagration being of incendiary origin is being investigated. One official commented that there had been labour difficulties at the stock yards recently, but he made no specific charges.
