Sir Stephen Allen left last evening for his home at Morrinsville. Squadron-Loader T. M. Wilkes, Direc tor of Air Services, is at the Grand Hotel. Dr. W. Gilmour, pathologist at theAuckland Hospital, returned from Wellington by the express yesterday morning. Professor P. W. Burbidge, professor of physics afc Auckland University College, returned from the South by yesterday morning's express. Mr. W. A. Veitch, 51.P. f or Wanganui, and Mrs. Veitch, who have, been 011 a visit to North Auckland, loft for the south by the express last evening. Mr. J. Bertram, one of the New Zealand Rhodes scholars for 1931, has been awarded the Charles Oldham Scholarship, and is now studying at New College, Oxford. Mr. E. A. Wallace, president of ithe New Zealand Institute of Secretaries will leave for Wellington by car this morning after attending a special council meeting of the institute. Mr % ,T. Annand-Smith, chairman of the Wellington chapter of the New Zealand Institute ot Secretaries, who has; been visiting Auckland, left, for Wellington by last evening's express. Mr. John Wielart, former conductor of the Auckland. Orchestral Society, has been chosen to conduct the performance of "Orpheus," which is to be presented this year at the Royal Albert, Hall, London. Mr. J. A. Arthur, president of th& New Zealand Railways Superannuation Association, and Mr. J. Commins, secretary, left for Wellington yesterday to attend the annual Dominion conference of the association. Lieutenant R. K. Washbourn, of H.M.S. Diomede, has been awarded the Ronald Megaw Memorial Prize for 1932-33, offered each year to the sublieutenant obtaining highest place in the examinations for lieutenant. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Virtue, of Auckland, who have been touring the British Isles, are visiting the Continent this month and intend to spend thres months in Canada and the United States before returning to New Zealand. The Rt. Rev. W. H. Baddeley, Bishop of Melanesia, arrived from Hamilton yesterday and officiated last- night at the consecration of the lady-chapel in St. Thomas' Church, Freeman's Bay. He will address a meeting in Scots Hall to-night. Mr. Denis M. Mulgan has been awarded a scholarship in music, to be held at Worcester College. Oxford. Mr. Mulgan, who is the eldest son of ilr. Geoffrey Mulgan, formerly of Auckland and Christchurch, was educated at Charterhouse, and has since been studying at London University. Mr. Kenneth Mackenzie, president of Auckland University College, was yesterday elected by the college council to be its representative on the New Zealand University Senate in succession to the Rev. Dr. H. Ranston, who has resigned. It was resolved to thank Dr. Ranston for his services. Captain A. Lanslev, of the Marine Department, who has been ship's surveyor in Duhedin for three years, is 011 six months' leave of absence and left for London with his wife and family by the Rotorua from Wellington on Saturday. Captain Lansley was stationed ai> Auckland for five xeari prior to his transfer to Dunedin.
