EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of Slay 21, 1884: Major Cautley, who - has been in Auckland for several weeks past inspecting the harbour and superintending the surveys being made in connection with a plan for the defence of Auckland Harbour, returns to Wellington by the Government steamer Hinemoa to-day. \Ve understand that His Excellency the Governor, who has given the question of the defence of the colony much attention, is of opinion that the defence works for this part or the colony will not be costly, and that he has a' high opinion of its natural advantages for defence purposes. »e believe it is likely that the chief defensive point for Auckland will be Mount Victoria. -- It will be seen in a London telegram which appears in to-day's issue that there is a probability of the Premier, Major Atkinson, receiving the honour of knighthood from the Queen on the occasion of Her Majesty's birthdaj. Should the information prove correct the numerous friends of the Premier, besides regarding it as a compliment to the colony, will cordially recognise the distinction as a well-merited recognition of the services he-- has rendered the country over a lengthened series of vears. • f Yesterday being the anniversary- or the proclamation of the Queen s sovereignty over the islands of r\ew Zealand was a public holiday in tne Supreme Court and principal public offices. , ... , • The Government have decided, compliance with representations whicn have been made from time to time, keep the telephone exchange open an night for the benefit of subscribers. .
