PINE EXHIBITION
SCOTTISH STALLION SHOW HOME OF THE CLYDESDALE [BY OUR AGRICULTURAL CORRESPONDENT] LONDON. March 20 The Scottish Stallion Show, held at Glasgow early in March each year, is the great national parade of males of tho Clydesdalo breed. This year it brought together a very fine exhibition, tho entries totalling 201. For tho third year in succession tho supremo championship was awarded to tho now five-year-old Craigio Beau Ideal (bv Craigio Rl'Quoid), from the stud of Mr. James Kilpatrick, Craigio Mains, Kilmarnock, whoso name is, no doubt, well-known to horse-breeders in New Zealand. Reserve championship and four out of tho six leading class prizes wero other distinctions won by exhibits from tho same stud. Craigio Beau Ideal is unquestionably one of the greatest of modern Clydesdales. Ho is of lino sizo and substance, has perfect legs and feet and most stylish action. Tho reservo champion, Craigio Capture (by Renown), which led tho four-year class, is a big, black, thickly-made horse, with plenty of flat bone and excellent movement. The most coveted trophy at the show is the Meiklom gold cup. But as tho cup can bo awarded only onco to tho same animal, this ruled out the champion which won it two years ago. Another exhibit of Mr. Kilpatrick's, Craigio Winalot, was ineligible for the same reason. When lesser horses had been discarded, tho reserve champion, and a big bay three-year colt, Beneficial (by Benefactor), shown by Messrs. T. and M. Teinpleton, of Sandyknowe, were left as close competitors for tho cup. Beneficial was tho leader of his class at tho show, and though so young, lias already taken a championship at both the Highland and the English Royal Shows. Only after an umpire had been called in to supplement tho four judges was a decision finally made in favour of Craigie Capture. Another trophy, tho Kilpatrick Shield, now takes the place of tho former Brydon Shield, offered for senior horses. Two years ago the Brydon Shield was won outright by Mr. Kilpatrick, who thereupon replaced it by a trophy named after himself. No exhibit from the donor's Craigie Mains stud competed for this, which was awarded to Beneficial, while the fiveyear Windlaw Marcellus (by Scotland's Marcellus). a horse of great size and weight and remarkably fine action, bred by Mr. William Kemp, Haddo, Methlick, was given reserve place An easy winner among the 19 entries in the veteran stallion class (above eight years) was Mr. James Kilpatrick's nine-year Craigie Winalot (by St. Albion), which in tho past has won every possible showyard honour. At the recent show he had the further distinction of being the stallion selected from an offering of 25, of various ages, to travel the Glasgow district in the forthcoming season, by which he gained a premium of £IOO for his owner.
