NEW CITY RESERVE
ORAKEI BASIN AREA
NEGOTIATIONS COMPLETED
An area of over four acres has just been added to the extensive reserves owned by the people of Auckland, as the result of a recent proclamation by ■nhich the sloping bank at the northwestern end of the Orakei Basin is being vested in the Auckland City Council for the purposes of a recreation ground. This proclamation in the current Gazette is the culmination of negotiations which were commenced several years ago when the eastern railway outlet was being constructed. The land now being vested in the city was originally an education lease, lying between the basin and the old road which crossed the strip of land leading to the bridge over the Orakei Basin outlet. The City Council surrendered the roadway and the new road, now the extension of Orakei Road, was constructed further to the west. The Government sub-divided its area fronting the new road and has now given the City Council the slopes of the basin at that point together with a narrow strip along the ridge. The land transfer survey necessary to flx the boundaries of the various properties was completed only last year and the vesting of the land, measuring, over four and a-quarter acres, has now completed the arrangement. The proclamation will take effect as from next Monday.
