SLEEPER ON RAILWAY
EFFORT TO DERAIL TRAIN What was apparently an attempt to derail a passenger train from Newcastle to Cessnock, New South Wales, was made recently, near Abennain, on the privately-controlled South Maitland railway line. A night officer, named Sullivan, was walking along the line just after the train had passed, when he found a new and splintered sleeper tying on the permanent way. The sleeper seemed to have been struck by the train and thrown aside. Its location was such, that the train, if thrown off the rails, might have run into a dry watercourse, which is spanned by a culvert about 20ft. high. The sleeper was one of a number intended for use in reconditioning part of the lino.
