SHIPPING SERVICE
BLUFF TO MELBOURNE EARLIER START SOUGHT [])Y TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] INVERCARGILL. Monday The shipping service between Melbourne and Bluff and its reinstatement in November were considered at a meeting to-day of representatives of the Southland League, the Invereargill Chamber of Commerce and the Bluff Harbour Board. It was decided by the meeting to send the following telegram to the Union Steam Ship Company and to forward copies to the Prime Minister and the Postmaster-General, asking for their support: —
"A meeting of representatives of the local authorities interested in the South Island-Melbourne passenger service was held to-day and, while appreciating your announcement that the Maheno will he operating in the service, unanimous disappointment was expressed that arrangements were not being made for the reinstatement of the service at an earlier date in view of the many important events taking place, including the opening of the Centenary celebrations and the Melbourne Cup. The interested local authorities of Southland strongly urge the commencement of the service in September. They would also urge your favourable consideration of including Hobart as a port of call in the service, as apparently it is only a matter of applying to the Commonwealth Government for the service to operate for passenger traffic on this section of tho run."
