APPALLING DEATH-ROLL DESTRUCTION OF VILLAGES RIVER CRAFT OVERWHELMED By Telegraph—PreßS Association—Copyright (Received May i>, 5.5 p.m.) CALCUTTA, May 5
Details have reached Calcutta of appalling havoc caused by the tornado in the Sylliet district, Assam, on April 30. So far more than 200 deaths have been reported and several hundreds of people aro missing. Five hundred were injured and scores of villages were destroyed, thousands of inhabitants being homeless. It is feared that the death-roll wijl be much heavier in remote districts, as scores of human bodies and dead animals are floating daily down the River Surma, where many fishing fleets and ferry boats were overwhelmed.
Relief parties have been sent to the affected area.
