WHITE BUTTERFLY PEST
CAMPAIGN BY SCHOOL "The white butterfly pest has increased at an enormous rate in the cabbage and turnip areas in the vicinity of Auckland in the past few weeks," said Mr. W. S. Hill, agricultural instructor at the Otahuhu Technical High School, last evening. To further the campaign against the pest three pupils of the school, including J. McCutchan, junior president of tho Auckland Young Farmers' Club, left for Palmerston North last evening. They will undergo a short course at the plant rosearch station there under tho Government entomologist, Mr. J. Muggeridge, in the breeding of tho parasites which destroy the white butterfly. "It' is intended to breed as many of the parasites as possible at the school to liberate in the early spring," added Mr. Hill. The fact that 600 caterpillars' of the white butterfly had been collected on an area of 12 square yards in a cabbago patch at Papatoetoe was an indication of the extent to which the pest had increased.
