OSTEND RATEPAYERS

ROAD IMPROVEMENTS Progress with road works was reported by the Ostend Road Board at the annual meeting of ratepayers last evening. The chairman of the board, Mr. E. H. Brown, presided over a large attendance. The metalling of Trig Hill Road marked the completion of the surfacing of all roads receiving any appreciable traffic. A good start has been made in the formation of The Strand, Onetangi. After several years of inquiry and correspondence, the Ostend road district has been included in the No. 2 Main Highways district, thus qualifying it to receive its fair share of petrol tax as a subsidy on its main roads.

" The past year has again been a very difficult one," stated the report. "Many ratepayers have found it almost impossible to meet their rate obligations, £374 being due on March 31, as against £3ll last year. However, the financial position was thoroughly sound."

Building permits for the year showed an increase from 15 permits valued at £271 to 20 permits valued at £1366.
