TOFUA SHELTERING
ROUGH SEAS ON COAST ANCHORED AT BREAM HEAD [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHANGAREI, • Monday • The steamer Tofua, which left Kioreroa on Saturday morning en route to Japan, has been sheltering at Bream Head, about one mile outside the Whangarei Heads. A heavy northerly wind has been blowing since the vessel left Kioreroa and the sea is very rough. From present indications it is considered the seas will be heavy for a day or two. The vessel is empty, and if the voyage had been continued the gale would have been head-on until Cape Maria Van Diemen was rounded, when it would be on the steamer's beam, which would be most uncomfortable in her light condition.
As far as can be ascertained no information has been received from the Tofua, and it is considered the captain anticipated the existing weather conditions and decided to shelter, thus conserving the coal supply. This evening residents at Ruakaka could see the Tofua still anchored at Bream Head and there was no indication of any preparation for departure.
