HARRIER RACING
PAST YEAR IN AUCKLAND TEAM SPIRIT MANIFEST The annual report of the harrier subcentrw of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Centre last week .stated that it was particularly pleasing to note the very large entries received for all interclub events, _ there being between 100 and 150 harriers in each of these. Har-rier-running may be said to have definj £ s t a blished .itself in the province, and the team spirit in running to have strongly manifested itself. The Auckland-Onehunga road race attracted an entry of 100 runners, representing seven clubs. Technical proved the winner, its team scoring 19 points. The individual race was won by J. W. Savidan, the British Empire champion, who, competing in. tho race for the first time, established a new course record of 36min. 35sec. Cooper, 36min. 42sec., was second. •
Tie Auckland harriers' teams championship was one of ,the most successful of the inter-club events conducted during the 1938 season, attracting entries from all clubs, the total number of starters being 150. Lynn dale Club, with 193 points, proved the winner, Technical, 290 points, being second, and versity, _ 346 points, third. Once again the individual victory was secured by J. W. Savidan, who won with consummate ease. A. Browne, of Lynndale, was second, and J. Nicholson, veteran runner of the Technical Club, third. The provincial championship, for which the harrier sub-committee secured a total entry of 112 barriers, was again conducted over the Lake St. John course of 10.000 metres, • starting and finishing at Ellerslie Racecourse. Both A and B grade championships were decided, the A grade being won by Auckland Club, with 40 points, with Lynndale, 41 points, second, and Technical, 54 points, third. The B grade championship was won by Lynndale. J. W. Savidan again proved the outstanding runner of the day. winning the A grade contest brilliantly by over 250 yards from A. B. Browne, with G. Hill third. A team to represent the province in the New Zealand cross-country championship at Wanganui was selected from the result of the teams' race and tho provincial championship, and consisted of J. W. Savidan, J. Nicholson, G. Hill, A. B. Browne, A. MacKenzie and S. Andrews. The team filled third place in the championship, first place beinc secured by West Coast, North Island, with 17 points, Otago being second with 32 points, Auckland third, . with 42 points. The positions members of tho team filled were: —Savidan. first; A. j B. Browne, 10th; Andrews, 15th; MacKenzie, 16th.
