COMMENT BY A JUDGE "A LOCAL DOG FIGHT" The High Court of Australia has granted Mr. J. T.. Lang leave to appeal against the decision of the Full Court of the Supreme Court of 'New South, Wales setting aside, the verdict in Mr. Lang's favour in the slander action instituted against him by Mr. A. C. Willis. The Supreme Court had ordered a new trial of the issues. Mr. Willis had alleged that the slander occurred in a speech by "Mr. Lang in the course of the Bulli by-election campaign last year,. and on one occasion subsequently. During argument in the High Coxirt, Mr. Justice Starke? interposed: "It seems to be a great fight over nothing." •• Mr. Justice Evatt: No; it is a fight over £20,000. ~ • Mr. Justice Starke said that what the jury had really found was that it was an electioneering talk. At a later stage, Mr. Justice- Starke remarked: It is a local dog fight. That is all it seems to be.
