FIRE PREVENTION

SPECIAL WEEK'S "DRIVE" MANY DISPLAYS ARRANGED Fire-prevention week throughout New Zealand will commence to-day and will conclude next Saturday evening. Special displays will be given by fire brigades throughout the Dominion, the. "drive" being similar to that held in 1931, when local bodies were requested to co-operate with the Government in endeavours to check fire losses. In a circular issued recently to local bodies by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. J. A. Young, it was stated that representations had been made by fire brigades, showing that in recent months there had_ been a tendency toward an increase in the number of fires. It was felt that fire prevention must be brought before the public at regular intervals, if the work was to become permanently effective. The programme arranged for the Auckland metropolitan fire district includes a- procession of fire engines through the city to-day and a general turn-out at the central station this evening. To-morrow there will be special drill, with ladder and pumps, at the Western Viaduct, near Prince's Wharf, and in the evening a special broadcast will be given from station IYA. The programme for Wednesday includes a procession through the city, a demonstration of ladder and rescue drill at the back of the central fire station, in Beresford Street, and a special broadcast in the evening. A pump and ladder display will be given in Beresford Street on Thursday and on Friday there will be another procession through tho city. A display of life-saving will be given in Beresford Street in the afternoon, when there will be a demonstration of junip--into a sheet. On Saturday morning a speciCl display for children will bo given in Beresford Street. All fire stations in tho metropolitan district will be open to the public each afternoon and evening. Firemen will be on duty to show visitors round. There will also bo special lessons for schools on fire prevention.
