VILLERS BRETONNEUX
TRIBUTE TO AUSTRALIANS DEFENCE OF THE TOWN (Received April 6, fi.ls p.m.) PATHS, April 5 The Mayor of Villcrs Bretonneux welcomed the Australian representatives when they arrived to take part in the celebrations commemorating the defence of the town by Australian troops 16 years ago to-day. Speaking during the visit of the party to the cemetery the Mayor said: " Your children lie buried in ground hallowed by their gallantry. We revere their memory equally with that of our own dead." One of the visiting Australians, Mr. Ferguson, said he was amazed to see how rebuilding had changed the entire contour of the country from what it was when he fought within half a mile of Villers Bretonneux. The Australians visited various cemeteries and memorials on the battlefields.
