A NEW FABRIC
WOOL AND RUBBER MANUFACTURE IN ENGLAND [from ouk "Wn cohhf.spondf.nt] SYDNEY, March 29 Leather upholstering in motor-cars is likely to bo superseded by a new wool and rubber fabric that has been discovered in England nnd which has already been tested and demonstrated to British car manufacturers. This new material was shown to Mr. E. H. Williams, managing director of the Castlemaine Woollen Company, during his recent visit to Europe. This week, when he returned to Sydney by the Narkunda, he said that although the process of manufacture was being kept a close secret, it was likely that it would be in general use before very long.
Mr. Williams stated that the woollen mills of Yorkshire wore now very busy and there was a feeling that the increase in trade would continue. The duty imposed on imported woollen goods by the British Government was the reason for the general improvement. In his travels through Yorkshire he found 110 feeling against Australia for developing her own woollen industry. Australian mills were equal to the host Yorkshire establishments in eflicienev.
''A striking feature of British woollens this year is the colourful designs which have been introduced for men's suitings," ho said. "Loud check patterns in blues and other colours arc being made. Bond Street, is already tailoring evening dross suits of a now midnight blue colour, which is Mack under artificial lighting. Fancy shirtings made from wool and cotton mixtures are also being made for British consumption, and will probably be introduced to Australia later."
Commenting 011 the Japanese competition, Air. Williams stated that this was not, yet a (footing the woollen manulacturers. It was being dealt with in Lancashire. In spite of imports from Japan during last year the Lancashire mills had sold and produced more yardage than they had done for some time.
