NELSON SETTLEMENT

MEMORIAL TO FOUNDER UNVEILED AT RIWAKA [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] NELSON, Monday What is believed to be the first and only public memorial to any member of the Wakefield family was unveiled yesterday on Pa Hill, Riwaka, to tbe memory of Captain Arthur Wakefield, founder of the Nelson settlement, and the first Riwaka settlers. The memorial takes the form of an impressive cairn erected solely by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Puttie, formerly of Riwaka, but now of Richmond. The unveiling ceremony, at the request of Mr. and Mrs. Pattie, was performed by Mr. K. J. Holyoake, M.P., and a descendant of the pioneer settlers. Mr. Pattie has done a great deal to place on record the trials, tribulations, heroism and determination of the first settlers, whom he knew as a youth. He is now in his 80th year. . Mr. Pattie was determined that he would leave behind some definite memorial to Captain Wakefield and the first settlers.
