KILLED BY SHARK

ANOTHER BOY VICTIM TRAGEDY NEAR MANLY COMPANIONS WARNED DEATH FOLLOWS RESCUE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received April 1, li. 15 p.m.) SYDNEY. April 1 Another shark tragedy occurred in the luncheon hour to-day at North Stevne, near Manly. Several boys were sliding in the second line of breakers when Leon Hermes, aged 16, cried out "Shark." His companions immediately afterwards saw the water stained with blood.

Hermes sank, but was soon brought ashore. Ho died half an hour later, however, from shock and loss of blood. His right leg was mutilated in a terrible manner and torn to shreds. While bathing in the surf Dee Why, three miles from Manly, Frank Riley, aged IG, was so severely injured by a large shark that he died shortly after being pluekily rescued by Mr. Laurie O'Toole and other members of the local life-saving club. Riley was standing beyond the second line of breakers in only three teet of water when the shark made its first attack. It missed but turned sharply and again attacked a second after Riley had given the alarm. The shark tore off one of Riley s legs at the hip and also the lower portion of his back. The boy's plight was noticed by other bathers, all of whom scampered to the beach, crying out "Shark." When Riley was taken ashore he tried to speak but died before medical aid arrived.
