FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of April 2, 1884: Over 100 ratepayers in Alma Place and Brookville, Ponsonby, including portions of Franklin, Ponsonby and College / Roads, have petitioned the City Council to form the main sewer for' that large and densely populated district in its natural position, the gully running from the foot of College Hill right up the district. The health of the population is affected through the want of drainage, as the gully is the receptacle of the drainage of the district. The evil effects of an "elongated cesspit," which the gully is, have been felt for years. A donation of £3OOO from Mr. .Justice Gillies was announced at a meeting of .the University College Council yesterday. The proceeds of the money will be used in providing two scholarships of an annual value of £IOO each, to be known as the Gillies and Sinclair Scholarships. The news from Khartoum is more reassuring. General Gordon has taken stringent measures to stamp out the disaffectio/i among the Egyptian troops and has caused two pashas to be hanged for treachery during an unsuccessful sortie.. He has received supplies and is hopeful of being able to suppress the rebellion. Reports which hare reached him state that the rebels are in a famishing condition on account of scarcity of food.
