WALLA WALLA'S VICTORY

DAY OF GREAT RACING WORTHY QUEEN'S FINE EFFORT DEFEAT OF AUBURN LAD [by telegraph —own correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday The interest in the visit of W alia Walla was shown by the great crowd which attended the meeting at Aiklington to-day. When the Invitation raco camo up for decision, every point of vantage was occupied, and the excitement was intense.

Walla Walla, who was a bit restless at the start, shot out of the barrier with Harold Logan at his wheel. The Australian pacer made all the running, with Ilarold Logan, Red Shadow, Jewel Pointer and Roi I/Or following in that order. With half a mile uone, Harold Logan was still a length behind the Australian, but in the straight the pair were close together. Excitement was intense as Harold Logan got level with the leader and actually headed him 100 yards from home. McKay. Walla Wallas driver, eat perfectly still until 50 yards from the post, when he shook his whip, and Walla Walla went on to win with perhaps a little in reserve by a neck. It was a great battle between the pair, and Harold Logan had everything in his favour. Walla Walla is definitely the belter pacer over a mile aixl his race on Wednesday over a mile and a-half will be a treat all will enjoy. Red Shadow made several attempts to reach Die loaders, but could not go the pace. Jewel Pointer and Roi L'Or did not begin as quickly as the others and nevftr looked winners. In Wednesday's race Roi L'Or's place will be taken by Lindbergh. Worthy Queeii Surprises

In the opening event of the day, the Preliminary Handicap, the ex-Auckland trainer J. S. Shaw won with Worthy Queen, who, from 108 s'ards behind, registered tho world's trotting race record of 3.15 3-5 for a mile and a-half. The winner made up her ground quickly, trotting the first mile in 2.7 2-5. The mare, who was recently leased "by Shaw, paid nearly £GO. Don Chennult went a good race and should improve. Royal Drusus was made a good favourite for the Belfast Handicap, but Reporter and Gunfire made the pace a cracker, and Reporter fairly outstayed the remainder. This was his fifth win for the year. Royal Again, from the back mark, started correctly and should show up in the near future. The Australian pacer Auburn Lud was the best of good things beaten in the Easter Handicap, for after following Vesuvius and Kewpie's Triumph for the greater part cf the journey, ho was pocketed two furlongs from home. Ho finished with a great burst in a race in which heads separated the first six horses. It was one of the best races ever 6een on the-course. Sir Guy, Gold Tinge, Vesuvius, Auburn Lad, Kingcraft nnd"Lindbergh finished almost in line after a grsat battle in the straight. Kewpie a Triumph had every chance, but lacked speed Nimbus set out to make the pace from end to end of the Express Handicap, but with six furlongs to go, Chenwood shot to the front, and led for the remainder of the journey. Once in front he is a high-grade pacer, and Tomkinson adopted the right tactics with him. Lilian Bond and 1 eter Locanda were kept too far back m the ear y stages, but both finished at a great rate to fill the minor places. Peter LoGanda, especially, may do better soon. Fine Display by Garner Garner's form since racing at Auckland ai) Christmas has been very poor, but in the Autumn Handicap she gave a grand display, and fairly outclassed the remainder. She followed Gay Puree and New Metford for the greater part of the way, but came away at the finish to win easily in 4.28 1-5. The victory was received in stony silence. Great Way trotted a great race, but Worthy Queen, who lost ground at the Etart, went the greatest race of her life. Young Frank, who came from Southland some months ago. but had since shown very poor form in his races, was well supported for the Wilkin Handicap and won by a narrow margin after a pleasing display. He went 4.2G 2-5 from a 4.40 mark and Bernbrook Lass, who gave away 3G yards, registered 4.23 3-5. She paced a grand raco and was unlucky. Vvornus tried to win the flying Handicap from end to end. but lie tired over the last bit. and Mountain Dell and then Sunny Morn just caught him as the post was reached. It Was a stirring finale to one of the greatest day's sport ever provided at Addington.
