ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

SUCCESSFUL FETE HELD LORD BLEDISLOE'S INTEREST THE ANNUAL COMPETITIONS "I can only most profoundly hope that all success will attend your work," said the Governor-General, Lord Blcdisloe, in addressing a parade of St. John Ambulance units at the lirst annual fete of the Auckland Division of the organisation, hold at Carlaw Park on Saturday. There were about 4000 people present. The annual Easter ambulance competitions were also held during the afternoon. His Excellency expressed the hope that members of the organisation would feel proud, conscious of the immense public good they were doing. "Good luck to you all," he added. Lord Blcdisloe displayed a keen interest in the proceedings, and watched both the ambulance contests and the various items of entertainment. He congratulated the leader of a gymnastic troupe from the Scddon Memorial 'technical College, and spoke to the keeper of seven elephants from "Wirtlis 1 Circus. His Excellency took the salute during n inarch past of the various ambulance units on parade and later spent some time studying the methods employed by ambulance men and nurses in treating a variety of "cases." Ambulance units represented were Hillside Railway "Workshops and No. 1 Locomotive, Dunedin, Tauranga, New Plymouth, Mast.erton, Whangnrei, Hamilton, Hnntly, Glen Aftoil and Auckland and Suburban. There were also nursing divisions from Wellington South, Whangarei and Auckland, and several cadet units.

The following senior ambulance officers were present: —Mr. C. J. Timks, commissioner; Mr. F. J. Hutchinson, assistant commissioner; Mr. A. W. Probert, Auckland district superintendent; Messrs. U. Hitchon, H. D. Cobb and F. E. Schofield, district officers; Messrs. C. Li*ndesay and R. K. Crawford, corps officers; Mr. S. E. Langstone, transport officer. The lady corps superintendent, Mrs. E. Cammcll, was also on parade. The judges were Dr. Garfield Stewart, Dr. A. Gumming, Dr. do B. Noakes, Dr. Gladys Montgomery, Dr. S. Kenrick, Dr. Alan Donald, Dr. Nell I. Houghton, Dr. Elaine Gurr, Dr. F. K. Smailes and Dr. J. Kirkwood. Corps Superintendent C. \Y. Qooderham, who has been in charge of the. competitions in previous years, was absent owing to illness.

The fete, which proved highly successful, was organised by Major A. T. Dow, who also commanded the parade. Items given during the afternoon included poi dances and songs by girls of the Victoria College, a gymnastic display by boys from the Seddon Memorial Technical College, ballet dances by pupils of Miss Boyle, and athletics by girls trained by Mrs. Leah Taylor. There was also a seven-a-side Rugby League match, and later a display by elephants and acrobats from Wirths' Circus. Incidental music was played by the Auckland Girls' Brass Band. The work of the fire brigade ana the St. John Ambulance was demonstrated when a shed erected on the field was set alight. The Parnell Fire Brigade answered the alarm and "rescued" a man from the burning building before extinguishing the flames. The "victim" was promptly treated for imaginary burns and taken away in a St. John ambulance. Whangarci Efficiency Cup.—Auckland No. 2, 1; Dunedin, 2; Hillside Railway, 3. Auckland Ambulance Cup.—Dunedin Locomotive. 1; Hillside Railway, 2; Tauranga. 3. ITorsley Challenge Cup.—"Wellington South Nurses. 1: National Reserve Nurses, 2; Auckland Nurses, 3. Smith-Hathaway 4 J?ose Bowl.—Onehnnga Nurses. 1; National Reserve Nurses, 2; Auckland Nurses, 3. Nurse Saunders-Jones Cup. —Onehnnga Nurses, 1; Auckland Nurses, 2; Wellington Nurses. 3. The prizes were presented at a social and dance in Iho evening. Several units were represented at a church parade at St. Matthew's yesterday morning.
